Brazil: Toddler, 2, dies after electric shock from mobile phone charger

Girl, 2, dies after being electrocuted by mobile phone charger at family home

A toddler who died after getting an electric shock from a mobile phone charger has been pictured.

The youngster, 2, suffered serious injuries and later died in hospital after the incident at her family home.

She’s been named as Sara Alves de Albuquerque and her death has been met with ‘profound grief’ in Erere in north-eastern Brazil, where the girl lived.

Local reports said she was still alive when she arrived at hospital and received treatment but died despite the doctors’ best efforts.

Police in the neighbouring municipality of Iracema will investigate the circumstances surrounding the youngster’s death.

It was not revealed what make of phone was involved or whether it was a charger from a recognised brand.

A statement released by the town hall of Erere said: ‘In this moment of deep pain, the municipal public administration expresses its solidarity with her family and friends, and expresses its most sincere condolences for this unspeakable loss.’

Facebook users have been reacting to the news and paying tribute to the young victim.

One said: ‘Rest in peace, little Sara. You’re a little angel with little wings now. Take care of your mummy from up there above, you hear?’

Another wrote: ‘There are moments when we cannot find the words to externalise our feelings, above all when it’s reported about a child. I wish them a lot of strength. May God comfort her parents’, relatives’ and friends’ suffering hearts.’

The investigation into Sara’s death is ongoing.

Brazil registered 355 deaths from electric shocks last year.
