The shipments in the PC market in India — comprising tablets, laptops and desktop PCs — touched 4.1 million units during the second quarter of 2021 (April-May-June), translating into a growth of 43%, according to a report by Canalys. The market crossed 4 million units first time since 2016. According to the report, laptops grew fastest, followed by tablets and desktops. Of the 4.1 million PC units shipped, 2.5 million are laptops, 1 million tablets and half a million desktops. Tablets saw one of their best growth during this period since 2016. Overall, HP led the PC market with over one-fourth market share.
HP tops the market
According to the report, shipments for HP went up by 54% year-on-year during the quarter.
What worked for HP
The strong sales of consumer products helped HP consolidate its position. The company held 26% market share during these three months. HP also launched the Victus gaming series aimed at the price-conscious buyers, expanding its portfolio of budget offerings.
Lenovo stands at No. 2
At No. 2 stands Lenovo with 20.5% market share.
What ‘didn’t work’ for Lenovo
Lenovo witnessed the weakest year-on-year growth as per the report. “Part of the reason for this slower-than-average growth was its strong performance in Q2 2020, when it managed its supply chain better than its competitors and ensured healthy market sell-in,” says Canalys report. Lenovo, as per Canalys, is still to make a dent in the consumer market due to which it failed to gain from the strong growth in this space.
Dell gets third position
Dell gets the third position with 12.8% market share, growing 40% annually.

Samsung ranks at No. 4, with best growth
Samsung ranks at No. 4, witnessing the best year-on-year growth of 134%. The strong numbers are attributed to the company’s tablet sales and also comparative lower base.

As per the report, the company is uniquely positioned to benefit from the cost-conscious device procurement happening across India to support multiple government and educational institutions. The company is likely to benefit from the drive to remote learning.
Acer beats Apple for 5th position
Acer gets the fifth position. The company beat Apple to get in the top 5 PC vendors in the Indian market. It grew its total shipments by 95% year on year.
