The Seoul-based firm said: “LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced that it is closing its mobile business unit. The decision was approved by its board of directors earlier today.
“LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.”
In their statement, LG said they will continue to provide “service support and software updates for customers of existing mobile products for a period of time”.
However, LG said this will “vary by region”.
While the LG G8X is expected to get Android 11 in Q2 of this year, with the LG Velvet 4G and LG G8S getting the patch in Q3.
The LG Wing, LG K52 and LG K42 will reportedly get the Android 11 update in Q4 of this year.
Elsewhere, the South Korean LG website also said LG is still planning on rolling out Android 12 for some devices.
However, update plans may get adjusted due to Google’s distribution schedule as well as how well the update performs during testing on different devices.
