Mobile speed camera locations for April in Gloucestershire – and which sites will feature Trucams

We are allowed to go out and about more as lockdown restrictions are eased – but we haven’t got freedom to speed on our roads.

Police can use a number of different types of cameras as they try to ensure people are obeying the speed limits in Gloucestershire.

And motorists are now told whether they will see officers with the cameras in their hands or if they will see the distinctive detector vans.

They are also told if they will face a Trucam camera which records a vehicle’s registration, make and model

Trucams can be operated by PCSOs as vehicles do not have to be stopped. Fines or invitations to speed awareness courses are then issued in the post – cutting out admin costs for the police.

Below are the priority sites for April:

  • The Wheatway – Trucam
  • A40 Northern By Pass – Van
  • Minchinhampton Common – Van
  • Dudbridge Hill – Trucam
  • Little Witcombe – Van
  • Cheltenham Road, Bishop’s Cleeve – Handheld
  • The Gorse, Coleford – Handheld
  • A48 Chaxhill – Van
  • A417 Nettleton bottom – Van and Handheld

The Mobile Camera Enforcement Unit said the presence of a speed camera will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed.

It adds: “This will help to improve the quality of life for people living in these areas and improve the safety of the roads for all those who use them.”

The mobile speed vans are operated by Gloucestershire police, and support the Police and Crime Commissioners’ Plan priority of ‘safe and social driving’.

The mobile speed detection vans operate at over 80 sites across the county and prioritise site activity by examining speed and accident data including intelligence received from communities.

In an effort to reduce speeding in areas across the county, the priority sites will be advertised each month.

Visits to the other sites will continue but emphasis will be placed on the advertised locations.

And it’s not just the mobile ones you have to be aware of as there are also a number of community priority sites.
