Negotiators were continuing conversations with a shooting suspect Saturday evening, at least two and a half hours after the man barricaded himself inside his residence at a Calumet City mobile home park, authorities said.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., police officers were called to the 100 block of State Street for a reported gunshot victim, village officials said. A 62-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds during a confrontation with another man, police said.
The suspect fled to his home in the 100 block of Maple where officers attempted to make contact. As police approached his residence, shots were fired at the officers, officials said.
The officers didn’t return fire and “took positions of cover” as a result, the Calumet City police chief said.
The multi-jurisdictional South Suburban Emergency Response Team was called to assist Calumet City police.
The Illinois State Police shut down multiple entrance and exit ramps to the nearby Interstate 94 shortly after the situation began.
As of 7 p.m., the northbound and southbound ramps to Dolton and Sibley avenues were closed. All southbound traffic was being diverted to Dolton Avenue westbound, state police said. Northbound traffic was being diverted to Sibley Avenue eastbound.
A number of streets were also closed in the area, village officials said.
Police haven’t confirmed if anyone beside the suspect is inside the residence.
