The youth group project at Oxclose Church, known as Ten10, want to use the mobile youth centre to reach out to young people in the community and take their project to the streets.

After being converted, the double decker bus will feature a workshop space, cafe, games consoles and tablets and will allow the Ten10 project to run detached work for young people in the community.

The group were awarded the bus from the Souter Charitable Trust and hope it will provide a safe space for young people in the community.

Emerging Generations Lead at Oxclose Church, Neil McDonald, said: “We want this to be a space where young people can come and have fun but also get support for life. We’ll be running workshops and hopefully some outdoor activities too.

“We’re really excited to bring this new resource to the area for young people but also the older community too. When young people are at school we also want to use the centre as a pop up cafe for the older community with things like job searching and CV classes too.”

Other plans for the mobile youth centre also include an on board listening service and providing a way for young people to establish good personal life values which impacts upon their decision making, behaviour and well-being.

The Ten10 youth group, which consists of youngsters aged 11-15, launched in June last year and is a faith based youth group which aims to give young people the chance to experience the fullness of life in any way they can.

The Ten10 bus project is being backed by National Lottery funding, Sunderland City Council Washington Area Committee, Souter Charitable Trust & Diocese of Durham.

The group is currently fundraising for money to convert the bus and anyone who wants to support the project can do so via this link.
